The Mini is rated to 122 °F. Above that it slows down, then shuts off until it cools. The usual causes are a closed case or cover, a hot dashboard or roof, and still air in full sun. Get air around it and shade the power supply.
Signs, and what the app alerts mean
- Thermal throttling: The 'Thermal Throttling' alert means the dish is running at reduced performance to avoid overheating.
- Thermal shutdown: Starlink's 'Thermal Shutdown' alert means the dish hit its maximum temperature and stopped service to cool down; service resumes once it cools.
- Starlink overheated: The 'Starlink Overheated' alert means the dish shut down from high temperature and will reconnect after cooling.
- Power supply thermal throttling: The 'Power Supply Thermal Throttling' alert means the power supply is too hot and Starlink throttles its power draw to cool down.
- Red light on the USB-C cable: A red light on the Mini USB-C cable means the car adapter/charger is too hot; it recovers automatically once it cools.
Usual causes
- A closed case, bag or cover. Starlink strongly recommends against adding protective covers, which degrade performance and snow melting.
- Behind a windshield or on a dashboard: glass also blocks the signal, and the cabin heats fast.
- A dark vehicle roof or truck bed in direct sun with no airflow underneath.
- A hot power supply: Starlink says the router and power supply are also rated to operate indoors between 0 and +30°C (+32 to +86°F). A power supply in a closed car in summer is outside that.
Fixes, in order
- Take it out of any case or cover.
- Raise it off hot surfaces: kickstand on grass or a pole mount, so air moves underneath.
- Shade the power supply or car adapter, not the dish (the dish needs open sky).
- In a car, power it through a ventilated spot; don’t leave the adapter in a closed glovebox.
- If it still shuts down in afternoon heat, schedule use for cooler hours, or accept the gap.
The low end of the range is -22 °F. Cold matters more for your battery than for the dish: see cold batteries.
Questions people ask
What temperature does the Starlink Mini overheat at?
Starlink rates the Mini to operate from −22 °F to 122 °F (−30 °C to 50 °C). Above that it throttles and can shut down to cool off. Direct sun on a dark surface can push it there even on a mild day.
What do the overheating alerts mean?
“Thermal throttling” means reduced performance to avoid overheating; “thermal shutdown” or “Starlink overheated” means it stopped to cool down and will reconnect after. A separate alert covers the power supply getting too hot.
My USB-C cable has a red light. Is that overheating?
Starlink says a red light on the Mini USB-C cable means the car adapter or charger is too hot; it recovers on its own once it cools.
