What changed
On April 16, 2026, the CPSC and Generac announced a recall of about 149,400 Generac portable generators in the US, plus about 260 in Canada (recall 26-407). Nine models are covered, each only within limited serial-number ranges: GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500, GP6500E, GP6500EDF, GP6700EDF, GP8000E, GP9200E and GP9500ETF. The CPSC notice lists the matching model numbers, G0077210 through G0081540.
The problem is fuel, not electricity:
“When first filling the recalled generator with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire or burn hazard.”
Generac received 114 reports of fuel leaks. No injuries were reported. The generators are orange and black, in a steel-tube cradle with two rear wheels, and were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other retailers nationwide and online from May 2025 to February 2026 for about $600 to $1,300. The remedy is a free repair at a dealer Generac has approved for the work.
Who it affects
Anyone who bought one of the nine listed Generac models between May 2025 and February 2026, and whose serial number falls in the recalled range. Generac’s recall page has the serial lookup. If you bought your generator before May 2025, the notice’s sales window suggests it isn’t included, but check the serial to be sure.
This matters for Starlink owners because a portable generator is one of the common ways to keep a home dish and router running through a long outage, and a new generator often gets its first tank of fuel during a storm, when there is little time to check anything.
What it means for your power setup
The risk is at the first fill, so a generator still in its box is the one to check first. Don’t wait for the next outage to find out your backup needs a dealer visit.
The power side of the plan doesn’t change. A home Starlink system is a small load for any of these generators; our outage guide covers running a dish and router from a generator and why a small battery or UPS for the home dish is often the better first layer. If you’re weighing a generator against a battery, our power stations guide compares usable capacity.
What to do
- Find the model and serial number on your Generac generator.
- Check it against Generac’s recall lookup at generac.com/about/recalls/GP-Carburetor, or call Generac at 800-396-9951 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, Monday to Friday).
- If it’s included, contact a Generac-approved dealer for the free repair, per the CPSC notice.
- If the generator hasn’t been fueled yet, don’t fuel it until you know whether it’s in the recall.
- Whatever generator you use, run it outdoors and away from windows and doors. Carbon monoxide is the other generator hazard, separate from this recall.
What stays the same
- Generac models and serial numbers outside the listed ranges: not part of this recall.
- Starlink’s published power figures for the Standard dish and Mini: unchanged.
- Our outage advice: unchanged apart from a pointer to this recall.
What we don’t know yet
- Whether the fault shows up only on the first fill or can appear later. The notice describes the first fill only.
- Dealer wait times for the repair. Generac’s notice doesn’t give them.
