What changed
On August 20, 2026, the CPSC and Goal Zero announced a recall of about 46,200 Goal Zero YETI 3000X portable power stations (recall 26-712). These are the large, roughly 92-pound units on a two-wheeled rolling cart with a telescoping handle and yellow handles. “Goal Zero” and “YETI 3000X” appear on the cart’s front bar and on the nameplate underneath.
The CPSC notice describes the hazard in one line:
“The recalled power station’s circuit board can overheat, posing a risk of serious injury from fire and burn hazards.”
Goal Zero had four reports of units catching fire, overheating and smoking. No injuries were reported. The YETI 3000X was sold at REI stores and online through Costco.com, Backcountry.com, Goalzero.com and other retailers from May 2020 through August 2025 for about $3,000.
The repair is software. The CPSC notice says owners should stop using the power station and install the free firmware update through the Goal Zero app, or contact Goal Zero to have it installed at no cost.
Who it affects
Owners of a Goal Zero YETI 3000X. The notice names this model only. Other YETI models, including smaller YETI stations, are not part of this recall.
This is the kind of station people buy to keep a home Starlink dish and router running through a long outage, or to run a Mini for days at a remote camp. If that’s how you use yours, it matters more than most recalls: these stations often sit plugged in and unattended.
What it means for your power setup
Until the firmware is updated, the CPSC’s advice is to stop using the unit. If your outage plan depends on a YETI 3000X, you are without that backup until the update is done. Plan for that now rather than during a storm.
The power math does not change. A station this size is far bigger than a Mini needs; our power stations guide explains usable watt-hours versus the label, and the outage guide covers running a home dish and router through a power cut. If you run a Residential dish on a UPS or station at home, the sizing advice there is unchanged.
What to do
- Check the cart’s front bar or the nameplate for “YETI 3000X”.
- If it matches, stop using it, per the CPSC notice, until the firmware repair is installed.
- Install the update through the Goal Zero app, or contact Goal Zero to install it free: 888-794-6250 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m. MT, weekdays), support@goalzero.com, or recallsupport.goalzero.com.
- After updating, confirm in the app that the firmware version changed. The CPSC notice does not give a version number, so ask Goal Zero which version is the fixed one if the app doesn’t make it clear.
What stays the same
- Goal Zero products other than the YETI 3000X: not named in this recall.
- Starlink’s power figures for the Mini and Standard dish: unchanged.
- Our runtime and solar sizing math: unchanged.
What we don’t know yet
- The firmware version that contains the fix. The notice doesn’t name it.
- Whether the update changes any output limits or charging behavior. The CPSC notice doesn’t say, and Goal Zero’s recall page may have more detail.
- Whether units sold before May 2020 or after August 2025 exist under the same name. The notice gives only the May 2020 to August 2025 sales window.
