What changed

On October 2, 2025, the CPSC announced a recall of about 2,400 Kogalla-brand rechargeable USB power banks (recall 26-002). The importer is Zyntony Inc. of Draper, Utah. Three models are covered:

  • BP125, 6,700 mAh, with a black USB-A jack
  • BatPak 2F, 13,400 mAh, with an orange USB-A jack
  • BatPak 3F, 20,100 mAh, with an orange USB-A jack

The model number is on the back. The CPSC hazard statement includes a detail worth noticing:

“The recalled power banks’ lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite, even when not in use, posing fire and burn hazards.”

There were two reports of overheating and ignition, including one minor burn injury and about $3,300 in property damage. The banks were sold only on Kogalla.com, from June 2024 to January 2025 for the BP125 and BatPak 2F and from August 2024 to January 2025 for the BatPak 3F, at $45 to $90 alone or $180 to $230 bundled with Kogalla’s trail lights. The remedy is a free replacement.

Who it affects

Owners of the three Kogalla models, most likely trail runners, hikers and bikepackers who bought them to power Kogalla’s lights. Other Kogalla products are not named.

These banks have USB-A outputs. They can’t run a Starlink Mini, which needs a USB-C PD source of at least 100 W through Starlink’s cable. They’re relevant here because backpackers carrying a Mini often carry exactly this kind of small bank for lights and phones in the same pack.

What it means for your power setup

“Even when not in use” is the important part. A bank that can overheat while sitting in a pack or a gear bin isn’t made safe by unplugging it. If you own one, the safe place for it is out of your gear until it’s replaced.

For a Mini on the trail, the power budget is unchanged. Our batteries hub covers the three battery types and when each makes sense, the USB-C power bank guide covers banks that can actually run the dish, and Mini cases covers packing it.

What to do

  1. Check the back of any Kogalla bank for BP125, BatPak 2F or BatPak 3F.
  2. If it matches, stop using it, per the CPSC notice.
  3. Request the free replacement through Kogalla’s online form at rtn.kogalla.com/products/request-batpak-replacement, or email bpreplace@kogalla.com.
  4. Store the recalled bank away from flammable gear until you can dispose of it at a household hazardous waste site that accepts lithium batteries.

What stays the same

  • Kogalla products other than these three: not named in the recall.
  • Starlink’s power requirements for the Mini: unchanged.
  • Our runtime math and bench list: unchanged.

What we don’t know yet

  • Whether replacement units are a revised design. The notice doesn’t say.
  • The watt-hour rating of each model. The notice gives mAh only, and converting mAh to Wh needs the cell voltage, which the notice doesn’t state.
